Gravity tends to see to that. My home’s value, unfortunately, went up, then came down. The price of gas in an election year tends to hike upwards early, but amazingly comes down as we get closer to November. In other cases, things which go down come up. Interest rates (hoping this isn’t the case for a while, at least), inflation, tax rates, and on a personal level, weight when we diet. It goes down for a while, may stay down for a while, but frustratingly, it comes up again.

Why is it that during our early formative years, weight gain was encouraged, or in many cases ignored? “Clean your plate.” “Take a second helping.” There were rewards for finishing everything- a pat on the back from Grandma and even better…DESSERT! But then life and our bodies shift. We hit our 20′s & 30′s and instead of eating to gain weight, we start watching everything we eat – adding and subtracting calories, fat grams, fibre… We hear that to lose weight we must eat less and exercise more. But when life is most stressful, we long for those old kudos, those rewards we received as kids on a deeper level. If we do this for our kids are we setting them up for issues with weight? Do we eat for emotional reasons? To relieve stress? To help take our focus off of something else?

If “up and down, up and down” describes your battle with weight, we’d like to invite you to get off of the “Yo-Yo” ride. You may or may not believe it is possible for weight to come down and stay down for good, and either way, we want to offer an alternative to this year’s resolution to diet and lose weight for 2012. Our Weight Control Groups start January 10, and promise to provide an environment for success in weight control that is unlike anything you’ve experienced before. Click here for more information!

Uh oh...

We started off with the best of intentions. A non-fat New Years Day party was a great start. The new club membership and the commitment to be there four times per week got off to the best of starts. This year was different, healthy choices were getting easier and easier to make. Then, IT happened…

IT might have been the flu. Or a job loss — or promotion. Or the anniversary of the death of a loved one. Or IT may have been…<insert one of a million stressful items out of your control here> and it got you out of the good habits you were starting to form and back to your stress and emotion directed eating and exercise habits.

Regardless of the IT in your life, for 2012, we invite you to reconsider purchasing another weight loss book, forget finding a newer better gym membership, and to close the book on the latest & greatest diet. We invite you to give us 10 weeks of your life to enter into a process of self discovery, accountability and lifestyle altering to get to the bottom of your past weight control failures and begin the ascent to the heights of healthy attitudes toward food and coping with stress. This permanent lifestyle transformation isn’t beyond your grasp. It isn’t impossibly expensive either. It is right here, within your reach, within your budget, and ready for you! Click here to go to our registration page.

Each group has 12 spots so grab a friend and sign up before 12/31/2011 to secure Early Bird Pricing a $100 savings off of the regular price.

We’re nearly a month away from the Winter Solstice and with the recent move to Standard time (away from Daylight Savings time) the amount of sunlight we encounter daily seems to be shortening by the second! Well, have no fear, at 10:30pm (Mountain) on Wednesday, December 21, the axis of the earth officially begins tilting the north pole toward the sun again, giving us the hope and realization of greater daylight hours.

We’re fortunate here in northern Colorado to have bountiful days of sunshine, and our longitude provides that we experience ample hours of that sunshine — unlike Alaska (and other northernmost parts of the world) that are experiencing nearly no daylight at all. As the days get shorter, we are faced with the coming of the holidays, which bring with them a whole set of issues that we hope our upcoming blog series will prepare us all for.

The holidays bring relatives into (or back into) our lives which can cause stress and revive dormant emotional issues that may not show themselves at any other time.

People generally report being more lonely during the holidays.

The holidays bring parties with celebratory (and calorie filled) foods and beverages, challenging even the most disciplined of us to imbibe and gain weight. The beverages, if not kept in check, can lead us into poorly made decisions, more impulsive behavior, and potentially a DUI.

We also face the end of the year, which can be a time to celebrate the achievements of the past year, or to consider the failures of the year gone past. Depression, anxiety, fear and other conditions don’t go home for the holidays, so be sure to watch out for their impact on yours and other’s lives.

What are you looking forward to most this holiday season? What are you looking forward to least? Let us know, and tune in next week for the first in our series of holiday sanity planning!
